Wastewater

The Wastewater Department is responsible for maintaining the public wastewater collection system which serves approximately 13,000 retail customers and 1 wholesale customer. The wastewater collection system consists of gravity pipelines, lift stations and force mains conveying wastewater to Charleston Water System's (CWS) Plum Island Treatment Plant. A new initiative for this Department includes setting up and maintaining an ongoing program to reduce inflow/infiltration into the wastewater collections system. As a function of public works this Department also provides street signs and street lighting services. The developmental growth on James Island continues to increase the service area.

Our Wastewater Department maintains 61 pump stations and 7 pump stations for the City of Folly Beach, which are part of a system that provides collection services to all wastewater areas of the island, including the Town of James Island, City of Charleston and City of Folly Beach residents. The Wastewater Department employs 18 full time employees.
