Rocks, pebbles, or stone ! Housing or building materials (including roofing shingles, sheet rock, insulation, etc.) GROUP II Call Charleston County Recycling (720-7111) about recycling of: ! Lead acid type batteries for autos, trucks and boats ! Gasoline or #2 fuel oil (residential type) ! Liquid paint ! Antifreeze ! Used oil (automotive, boat, lawnmower, etc.) ! Contaminated water - Please call L.H. Environmental Services (871-5580 or 308-1353, after-hours pager) !NOTE: Advanced Auto Parts & Auto Zone accepts used oil and/or batteries. GROUP III Call either Berkeley County Landfill (572-4400) or Chambers Oakridge Landfill about disposal of: ! Hazardous waste ! Any of the following materials which have come in contact with pentachlorophenol, creosote, arsenic, chromium, asbestos, or asbestos cement products: Railroad ties, utility poles, fence poles or posts, soil, containers GROUP III continued... Any mechanical part used in any manufacturing process: Broken, cut, or chipped pipe insulation, sheet rock, roofing material, floor tiles, etc. GROUP IV: The following WILL NOT be picked up or disposed of by the JIPSD Solid Waste Department under any circumstances: ! Ammunition ! Swimming pool chemicals ! Explosives or explosive material ! Any material that is considered hazardous or special waste (including asbestos, radioactive materials, industrial chemicals, etc.). PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY LIQUID OR DRY CHEMICALS, AMMUNITION, OR ANY OTHER HAZARDOUS OR SPECIAL WASTE MATERIAL IN GARBAGE, TRASH OR CONTAINERS FOR PICK-UP. James Island PSD Garbage & Trash Information Residents GARBAGE continued& NOTE: Containers should be removed from the curbside after collection as soon as possible but no later than 12 hours after collection. YARD TRASH YARD TRASH must be separated and placed on the ground as indicated below. Please break up large amounts of yard trash into separate piles for separate pick-ups. ! Leaves, pine needles and/or grass clippings must be placed in clear plastic bags which must not exceed 50 pounds when filled. ! Branches, limbs and logs (6 feet maximum length) and pine cones. NOTE: Any live tree cut in its entirety will not be picked up unless prior approval has been granted by the JIPSD Solid Waste Department and authorized by Charleston County Planning Department (202-7200). !Other yard vegetation, old fire wood and tree stumps. Debris piles must not exceed 4 feet in height, 5 feet in width and 15 feet in length (NOTE: Tree stumps must not exceed 2000 pounds or they will not be picked up). MANMADE MATERIALS MANMADE MATERIALS must be separated and placed on the ground as indicated: Furniture , carpeting and backing, mattresses and box springs, paint can(s) (lids off, empty, dry), plastic materials (including old plastic trash cans) and bathroom fixtures. ! Miscellaneous trash, including home generated scrap lumber and ash (NOTE: Ash must be cool before being placed for collection. Debris piles must not exceed 4 feet in height, 5 feet in width and 15 feet in length). ! Old boats (NOTE: The JIPSD must have the owner's written permission and release). MANMADE MATERIALS cont. ! Tires  mounted on or off rims  call the JIPSD office (762-5234, ext. 118) and ask for date of next tire pick-up before placing at curb. ELECTRONICS Please call 762-5234, ext. 118 to schedule for electronics pick-up. ! Electronics: televisions, computers, VCRs, vacuums, etc. METAL MATERIALS ! Refrigerators & freezers (NOTE: For safety, doors must be removed and the units must be cleaned out). ! Air conditioners ! Ranges/stoves, water heaters ! Furnaces ! Large drums ! Fuel tanks cut in half and cleaned only ! Swing sets and metal sheds must be disassembled ! Tire rims without tires ! Metal utility trailers, including boat trailers must be cut in half (NOTE: The JIPSD must have owner's written permission and release. Tires, wood and other materials need to be removed from the trailer). ! Miscellaneous including pipes, fencing, wiring, scrap pieces (NOTE: No metal will be picked up if it has concrete, insulation, wood, plastic or vegetation attached). ALL SOLID WASTE (garbage, trash, appliances, metal) MUST BE PLACED AT THE CURB OR OTHER DESIGNATED AREA BY 7:00 A.M. ON THE DAY OF PICK-UP. Place all materials away from in-ground water and gas meters, fences, mailboxes, overhead power, cable or telephone lines, or low hanging tree limbs. SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and Charleston County regulations require the JIPSD to separate all solid waste by the following major types: GARBAGE, YARD TRASH, MANMADE MATERIALS, ELECTRONICS AND METAL MATERIALS. Separated materials must go to specific locations at the County's landfill, incinerator or scrap metal yard. GARBAGE GARBAGE is food waste, refuse and small household trash. It must be put in containers designed for garbage, or in plastic bags placed in garbage containers. Containers must be watertight receptacles made of metal or heavy duty plastic with suitable handles and tight fitting covers, not to exceed 30 gallon capacity or 50 pounds when filled. (This limitation includes rainwater weight from uncovered garbage cans and is enforced to prevent injuries to our employees). PLEASE NOTE Disposal of Infectious Materials: ! Carefully dispose of needles, syringes and/or lancets in an empty bottle or plastic container with the bottle cap or lid and place tape over the closed container when it is 2/3 third full. Double bag your filled container and dispose of with your household trash. !
